Giggs scores his 100th league goal

LONDON: Ryan Giggs’s 100th league goal saw Manchester United on the way to a 4-1 win against bottom of the table Derby County to keep up the pressure on Premier League leader Arsenal on Saturday.

Victory at Old Trafford, where Carlos Tevez scored either side of half-time, left second-placed United a point behind the Gunners, who travel to struggling Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Chelsea remained third, two points adrift of United, after a 2-0 win against Sunderland, despite being without star striker Didier Drogba.

Portsmouth maintained its impressive form with a sixth successive away win as it beat Aston Villa 3-1, a victory that saw it move up into fifth place.

Hat-trick by Yakubu

Ayegbeni Yakubu’s hat-trick helped Everton move level on points with Villa after a 3-0 win at home to Fulham, which hasn’t won away in 25 matches.

The results: Chelsea 2 (Andriy Shevchenko, Frank Lampard) bt Sunderland 0; Everton 3 (Yakubu Aiyegbeni 3) bt Fulham 0; Manchester United 4 (Ryan Giggs, Carlos Tevez 2, Cristiano Ronaldo) bt Derby County 1 (Steve Howard); Newcastle United 2 (Obafemi Martins, Habib Beye) bt Birmingham City 1 (Cameron Jerome 9); Aston Villa 1 (Gareth Barry 72) lost to Portsmouth 3 (Craig Gardner, Sulley Muntari 2). — Agencies
