Solitary-goal win for Salgaocar

CHENNAI: Salgaocar Sports Club Goa won the South and West Zone qualifying round phase of the Nike-MUPC under-15 football tournament at the Nehru stadium on Saturday.

In the final, Salgaocar beat Cosmos (Tiruvallur) by a solitary first-half goal scored in the 15th minute by Pandhari Chopdekar off a pass from Godfrey Silva.

The result notwithstanding all the semifinalists move to the final phase of the competition to be held later in Goa.

They will be joined by the semifinalists from the North-East Zone competition to be held in Chandigarh.

Tie-breaker

Earlier in the semifinals, Cosmos defeated Sporting Club de Goa 2-0 with Gunasekharan and Mugil Raj scoring. The match between Mahindra United Football Club (Mumbai) and Salgaocar was resolved via the tie-breaker.

Locked 1-1

The teams were locked 1-1 in regulation time. Darshit Thakker scored first for Mahindra, while Enfal Vaz struck the equaliser.

In the tie-breaker, Salgaocar won 5-4.
