BANGALORE: The trainees at the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association’s High Performance Training Centre had a pleasant surprise when noted American sports psychologist, Mr. Rob Polishook came calling and held an impromptu training session with them. Mr. Polishook, who is associated with ‘Inside Zone’, a sports performance related group-based in New Jersey, gave valuable tips in motivation, mind conditioning and art of self belief . Speaking to the media here, Mr. Polishook said “I was just on a holiday and heard about KSLTA’s good work and decided to drop at the invitation of Mr. SunilYajaman, Director of HPTC. It was a rewarding experience, interacting with the trainees here.” He said sports psychologists as a breed were now much in demand in the U.S. and he expected that pattern to catch up in other parts of the world. “I have worked with professional players of different disciplines and baseball teams like New York Mets. I think we have provided valuable inputs to sportspersons in enhancing their performances”, said the expert. Mr. Polishook said “for optimum performance, a player has to be mentally relaxed and be aware of the present situation that he is in and look at the ways to give his best.” The trainer also said that players should learn to treat failures as stepping stones to success and there has been no success without failure. “The trick is to lean from the failure and experiment with the ways to succeed,” said Mr. Polishook. Mr. Polishook’s training stint had an immediate impact on Aditya Madkekar, the India No. 5. The player had been having bit of problem with the serve and the tips from Mr. Polishook saw him get his serve right with few adjustments. Anjan Viplav, the head coach of HPTC was all praise for Polishook’s gesture.
