New Delhi: Over 100 lawyers, most of them women, on Thursday sent a memorandum to Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan demanding an enquiry into the incident in the chambers of V Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore, on October 31. 3 FIRs registeredThe memorandum said three First Information Reports (FIRs) had been registered against the advocates for a single occurrence; suo motu contempt notice had been issued by the Madras High Court; Bar Council of Tamil Nadu had issued notice to the advocates concerned for explanation and the anticipatory bail filed by advocate G. Elangovan was dismissed by the trial court and the High Court. Advocates provokedIt alleged that while considering the whole issue, the Presiding Officer alone had provoked the advocates and he was equally responsible for the incident. However, he had been safeguarded by the judiciary. Impartial enquiryThe signatories while seeking an impartial enquiry, requested the CJI to intervene to save the legal fraternity, especially women lawyers, by initiating appropriate action against the magistrate concerned.
