Mysore
MYSORE: Though Mysore has been projected as an emerging destination for industrial investment, serious doubts have been expressed over the availability of the workforce in the city, which is reeling under a shortage of labour in the manufacturing and services sector. The shortage of skilled as well as unskilled labour in Mysore is understood to have become the bane of industrialists, who are finding it increasingly difficult to meet their contractual commitments and using their machinery to the optimum. “The situation on the labour front is quite grim in Mysore. There is a severe shortage of workforce,” said General Secretary of Hebbal Industrialists’ Association Suresh Kumar Jain. Claiming that unemployment is a “myth”, Mr. Jain said there is no industry in Mysore sporting a “No Vacancy” board. One can only see “Wanted” boards outside manufacturing companies. “Most industries in Mysore need skilled as well as unskilled labour,” he said. Mysore district is home to 22,000 small scale industries, which currently employs about 1.05 lakh people. In addition, there are about 95 medium and large scale industries, providing employment to another 74,000 people. “But, the existing workforce is falling woefully short of the requirement, sending delivery schedules of the manufacturing and services sector haywire. The present shortage of workforce is estimated to be around 30,000 to 40,000,” Mr. Jain said.Although the city had managed to attract about 10,000 to 15,000 labourers from States such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, there were still vacancies in many industries for people with low qualifications, he said.
