Court asks for original map of Bidar Fort
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court has adjourned further hearing on a petition by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the State Government challenging the grant of a part of land by the Bidar Land Tribunal adjacent to the Bidar Fort to some beneficiaries.
The State Government and the ASI had petitioned the High Court against the order of the Land Tribunal granting some lands to beneficiaries. While the ASI claimed that the land belonged to it and, therefore, it could not have been granted, the State alleged fraud in the grant of the land.
The ASI said it was in charge of the maintenance and upkeep of the fort built by the Bahmani Shahs who ruled Bijapur, Gulbarga, Bidar, Ahmednagar and other areas.
It contended that the fort and the lands around it were protected monuments. Therefore, the land within and adjacent to the fort could not have been granted under any circumstances. It said even though the Assistant Commissioner, who was part of the tribunal had objected to the grant, the other members had gone ahead with the grant.
While the ASI urged the court to quash the grant, saying that the Fort was a heritage structure and that it must be protected, the State has sought for quashing of the tribunal order too, saying that a fraud had been played on it.
