Bill on metropolitan plan panels passed

HYDERABAD: Amidst stiff resistance from the entire Opposition, the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed a Bill providing for constitution of Metropolitan Planning Committee in every metropolitan area in the State for preparation of draft development plan for the respective areas.

Alleging that the move was aimed at providing “rehabilitation” to “unemployed” Congress leaders, the Opposition parties – the TDP, the TRS, Left, MIM and the BJP-- insisted on a division on the passage of the Bill. And, the Treasury benches scraped through with a margin of nine after the Chair opted for head count. Introducing the Bill, Municipal Administration Minister Koneru Ranga Rao said the constitution of the planning panel was part of reforms mandated by the Centre for securing funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

It would comprise 2/3rd representatives from the local bodies while MPs and MLAs would be special invitees on the lines of the District Planning Committees.
