Defence Ministry releases gazette notification on formation of eight wards The final publication of the electoral rolls is on January 4 HYDERABAD: Civic elections are round the corner in the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) with the Union Defence Ministry releasing the gazette notification on formation of eight wards on Tuesday. Elections to the civilian wards are expected to be held on Feb.10 next year. While the eighth ward will be reserved for Scheduled Castes, three wards will be reserved for women while the rest are for general category. Reservation for women wards is to be decided through a lottery method on November 22, said SCB CEO V. Premchand. Revision of the electoral rolls is to commence in the next few days so that the draft list is published next month. Twenty days of time will be given for receiving claims and objections. The final publication of the electoral rolls is on January 4 and the election notification is likely to be issued soon after. Two months ago, the SCB had released the draft notification of wards formation but the official gazette release took a while in coming from New Delhi. SCB is currently involved in the preparation of photo electoral rolls for the Assembly constituencies as per the Election Commission’s guidelines but it maintains a separate electoral rolls list under the supervision of the Defence Ministry. Elections were last held for the erstwhile seven civilian wards in August last year after a gap of nine years. They were annulled four months later when the new Cantonment Act 2006 came into vogue. Incidentally, the High Court has dismissed a petition filed by the elected members challenging the body’s abolition on Tuesday.
