KOCHI: With a section of landowners refusing to surrender land for the panchayat road development scheme for Mulavukad, authorities are planning to persuade the reluctant landowners to surrender their holdings. Originally, the road development scheme for the island was to begin on September 1. The scheme was to develop the existing village road into a 7-meter-wide one for handling increased traffic pressure. An all-party meeting would soon be convened to discuss the issue. It was also decided to persuade the reluctant landowners to surrender their land and for an all-party delegation to meet them individually to persuade them, said Majeed Hussain, vice-president of the Mulavukad panchayat. According to Mr. Hussain, 24 persons were to surrender holdings for the first 2.75km-long stretch. Of the 24 persons, 13 reside outside Ernakulam. A decision regarding these landowners would also have to be taken, he said. Nearly 420 persons have already submitted their consent for the road development project. However, there was delay in completing the paper works of those who have submitted land for the project. Steps should also be taken for expediting the processing of documents, he said. Compensation would be provided to landowners who have land below 10 cents and have to surrender land for the project. Others who have holdings above 10 cents would have to surrender the land free of cost, said K.V. Thomas, MLA. The Goshree Island Development Authority would support the Rs.10-crore road project. The Authority was also understood to have obtained clearance from the State Finance Department for paying Rs.2 crore to the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and the Kerala Water Authority for shifting telephone posts and water supply pipelines, Mr. Hussain said.
