Far from over: Commuters wading through rainwater in Vyasarpadi Jeeva Railway Station subway on Wednesday. — CHENNAI: Though rainwater has drained off in several localities, the Vyasarpadi Jeeva Railway Station subway is still under two-foot-deep water. A visit to the area on Wednesday revealed that the subway was not fit for use. Railway station authorities have left the tubelights on to help the commuters find that the subway is unusable. A staff at the station said that this was always the case following heavy rain. Rainwater running off from B.B. Road, Ganesapuram and Ambedkar College near the station inundates the subway as Vyasarpadi is a low-lying area. Commuters, who take the stairs to purchase tickets from the booth on the other side of the railway track, wade through the water to save time.
T. Ravikumar of the All India Rail and Bus Passengers Welfare Association, said the subway and the Vyasarpadi road under bridge are often inundated following heavy rain. The flooding of the road under bridge leads to traffic jam and water stagnation, damaging the road. Vyasarpadi North councillor Zeenath Firdous said the inundation of the station was a perennial problem. Water was drained out to restore normality. A long-term solution would be to construct a foot overbridge, he said.
