Police to check veracity of ‘press’ stickers

Special Correspondent

Police want to issue legal stickers to media vehicles

They will bear an exclusive design: official

BANGALORE: The City Traffic police will soon take up a drive to check the veracity of the “press” stickers on vehicles in the city. Recently, the number of vehicles sporting the stickers had increased in the city. The police suspect that vehicles that have nothing to do with media organisations are also using the stickers.

Speaking to The Hindu, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) K.C. Ramamurthy said that it is imperative that vehicles carrying working journalists on duty from one place to another on reporting assignments or carrying newspaper bundles or outdoor broadcast machinery, need to have the stickers prominently displayed on the windshield of four-wheelers or on the fender of two-wheelers. Mr. Ramamurthy said usually vehicles with the stickers have access to all roads. But there are “others” who are neither from the media nor from the press corps, who use this privilege for moving around the city in style. He said the police were wary of this fact and wanted to issue legal stickers to all vehicles used by the media and press organisations and their bona-fide reporters.

As a first step, the police would examine the rules about providing “press” stickers. The stickers would have some kind of seal of authority to make them official and be recognised by the police. And it should be so exclusively designed that media and press should carry them with pride on their vehicles, Mr. Ramamurthy said.
