Udupi: Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (development) M.H.A. Sheikh said on Saturday that eco-tourism could be used to create awareness on protection and conservation of forests and beaches. He was speaking after inaugurating the Village Forest Committees’ Convention, here. Mr. Sheikh said a package could be developed, whereby pilgrims visiting Udupi district could be encouraged to visit beaches and forests. They could be told about the importance of protection of forests and the vital role that “Kandlavanas” play against sea erosion and for protection of marine life. Mr. Sheikh said the Village Forest Committees had the important task of protecting forest resources. Forest resources could be protected only through active co-operation of the people. Students should be made aware of the significance of afforestation, he added. Geeta Prabhu, president of Udupi taluk panchayat presided over the function.
