Demand for more special educators

Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE: Saarathy Pammac, an association of parents of persons with disabilities, has asked the State Government to appoint more special educators.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the association here recently, its president S. Samarasa Pandian, said that there were only 30 special educators in the 155 special schools in the State.

The Government had not given a posting for a special educator for Coimbatore district, which had about 2,500 children with mental disability who had to be educated.

The association asked the Government to appoint teachers to special schools, as it did to regular schools. Even teachers who completed the Government’s special education course were appointed in regular schools and not in special schools, Mr. Pandian said.

The minimum qualification for taking the junior diploma course should be a pass in Higher Secondary examination and for Senior Diploma course graduation should be the basic qualification instead of B.Ed.

The association requested the Government to release the monthly grant of Rs. 500 to all persons with mental disability.
