COIMBATORE: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) activists burnt here on Sunday the effigy of former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP, Ram Vilas Vedanti for his alleged “fatwa” to behead Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and chop his tongue for his remarks on Lord Ram.

Led by former MP, M. Ramanathan, DMK urban district secretary M. Veeragopal and Leader of the Opposition in the Coimbatore Corporation Council V. N. Udayakumar, the party activists raised slogans against Mr. Vedanti at demonstrations and effigy burning at nine places in the city.

BJP National Council member S.R. Seghar said the effigies were burnt in seven police station limits.

He said his party would demand the station house officers on all these police stations to take action against those involved in the effigy burning.

Or else, the BJP should also be given permission to burn effigies in protest, he said.

The party would stage a demonstration here on Tuesday to condemn the attack on its office, Kamalalayam, in Chennai on Sunday, Mr. Seghar said.

Staff Reporter adds from Tirupur: More than 250 Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadres on Sunday burnt the effigy of Mr. Vedanti. Led by Municipal Chairman K. Selvaraj, they raised slogans against Hindutva organisation for opposing Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project, which they termed was over 100-year-dream of Tamils. They urged the Central and Uttar Pradesh Governments to take action against Mr. Vedanti.

Traffic was disrupted for an hour in around the old bus stand area following the protest.

In Anuparpalayam also, the DMK cadres burnt the effigy of Mr. Vedanti.
