M.S.S. Wakf Board College boys make a splash

Madurai: M.S.S. Wakf Board College, Madurai dominated the proceedings in the Madurai Kamaraj University inter-collegiate swimming meet at SDAT Swimming Pool, Madurai on Monday.

C. Kumar (3 golds) and J. Parankundram and P. Ravikumar (two golds and one silver each), all from M.S.S. Wakf Board college, helped the college to win the overall championship with a tally of 54 points and annex the S.P.S. Gurusamy Nadar Thngammal Memorial Trophy

In the women’s section, Sri Meenakshi Government College emerged the best college with a total of 35 points

SRM Varsity triumphs

SRM University, Chennai lifted the Kamarajar Memorial Trophy defeating Sathyabama University, Chennai 31-33, 25-18, 25-23, 25-19 in the final of the fifth annual State-level inter-collegiate volleyball tournament at Nagamalai on Sunday.

St. Paul’s takes honours

St. Paul’s Higher Secondary School, Salem lifted the Murugesan Memorial Trophy, defeating American College HSS, Madurai 88-45 in the final of the eleventh annual State-level inter-school basketball tournament at Theni on Sunday.

Special awards: Raguram (St. Paul’s HSS), Velmurugan (ACHSS), Athinarayanan (MSPHSS), Harishankar (DBTR HSS).

The results: Final: St. Paul’s HSS 88 (Srinivasan 39, Raguram 24, Joseph 19) bt ACHSS, Madurai 45 (Karuppasamy 18, Prakash 10). Third place: MSP HSS, Dindigul 72 (Madhavan 22, Athinarayanan 15) bt DBTR HSS, Myl aduthurai 48 (Karthik 14, Harishankar 12).

Uma Maheswaran wins

P. Uma Maheswaran of Arul Malar Higher Secondary School won the boys under-25 title in the District-level chess tournament, organised by Champion chess centre, in Madurai on Sunday.

Two titles for Rezmi

S. Rezmi of Sowdambiga Matriculation Higher Secondary School (Thuraiyur), won the girls’ cadet and sub-junior titles at the district-ranking table tennis tournament, jointly conducted by the Tiruchi District Table Tennis Association and BHEL Community Centre, here on Sunday.

Easy win

Pavendan scored 71 and C. Raja scalped four wickets as Rajappa Vandayar Memorial CC defeated Bharath College by 79 runs and entered the quarterfinal of the Indian Air Force Platinum Jubilee cricket tournament in Thanjavur on Monday.

The scores: Rajappa Vandayar Memorial CC 217 for eight in 35 overs (Pavendan 71) bt Bharath College 138 in 29 overs (C. Raja four for 19).

Basketball tournament

Jamal Mohammed College, Tiruchi, will conduct State-level basketball tournament from September 4 to 6 at its court. Nine teams — Sathyabama University, S.R.M. Engineering College, Madras Christian College, Loyola College, Jeppiar Engineering College, Gandhigram University, St. Joseph’s College of Engineering, St. Xavier’s College, Alagappa University — will also participate in the tournament.
