HYDERABAD: The Centre is likely to consider a proposal submitted by the State Government seeking enhancement of subsidy to farmers and others who take up post-harvest management (PHM) under the National Horticulture Mission (NHM). The proposal envisages increasing the subsidy given on establishment of pack houses, integrated pack houses, cold storages, refrigerated vans, ripening chambers from 25 to 50 per cent. The Centre has agreed in principle to enhance the subsidy and it is likely to be approved by the Planning Commission shortly. The idea behind the setting up of these facilities is to enable the farmers to preserve the farm produce. Under the State annual action plan for horticulture mission, Rs. 10 crore was earmarked for PHM. Review meeting
A three-member official delegation led by Horticultural Commissioner K. Madhusudan Rao and comprising Andhra Pradesh State Horticulture Mission executive Director H. Arun Kumar and AP Micro Irrigation Project head K. V. Satyanarayana attended a review meeting convened by officials of the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperation exclusively for the State to review the implementation of NHM. During the review, PHM came up for discussion and officials were directed to ensure that lack of proper techniques should not affect the produce. “The State Government officials prevailed upon the Centre the need to enhance the subsidy,” a senior official said. The Centre was informed that these facilities were in use for a couple of months in a year and hence the need to enhance subsidy. Projects
“We propose to establish 150 pack houses, seven integrated pack houses, 10 cold storages, 15 mini cold storages, five refrigerated vans, and seven ripening chambers,” the official disclosed. Officials are hopeful that all these projects would be established with enhanced subsidy. The Government has already identified Anantapur, Kadapa, Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar and Prakasam districts for the establishment of fruit clusters that would have all the necessary PHM facilities.
