Bangalore: There are 92,000 new cases of oral cancer diagnosed every year in India and 80 per cent of them are in the late stages. With a view to prevent oral cancer, the computer-assisted “Oral Brush Biopsy (Oral CDx)” technology was launched here on Thursday, which helps detect the risk of oral cancer by testing small spots in the mouth. The technology was launched by the former Test cricketer, Mohammed Azharuddin, at a workshop organised by the Indian Dental Association to train dentists in this new technology. Scientist and inventor of this new technology, Mark Rutenberg, made a series of presentations on “Brush Biopsy.” Zahra Hussaini of International Health Continuing Education Providers, who was instrumental in bringing this technology to India, said, “Oral CDx” is a computer assisted method that can aid in confirming the nature of apparently benign oral lesions and reveal precancerous and cancerous ones which are clinically not suspected to be so.” Dr. Hussaini said that Oral CDx can prevent oral cancer by facilitating painless testing of the small white and red areas in the mouth.
