Garment factory workers stage protest
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: Members of the Garments Karmikara Sangha, Karnataka, held a protest demonstration in front of Spice Islands Apparels Ltd. at Peenya on Thursday protesting the sudden and “illegal” closure of the unit.
The sangha said the management of the unit had not issued any prior notice to workers about the closure. With this, over 550 workers were thrown to the streets. It said the State Government’s permission had not been for closure of the unit, thus violating Section 25 FFA of the Industrial Disputes Act.
It said workers of the unit were forced to take settlement under coercion and threat. The workers under the sangha had organised a demonstration in front of the office of the Labour Commissioner on August 27, it said. The protesters demanded immediate reopening of the unit. M.D. Hari Govind, general secretary of AITUC and office-bearers of other associations extended their support by participating in the demonstration.
