Balakrishna displays histrionics

Staff Reporter

Warns fans against getting too close

Seeking blessings: N. Chandrababu Naidu and Balakrishna coming out of a temple along with the newly-wed couple after offering prayers at Nimmakuru on Wednesday.

VIJAYAWADA: Friends and relatives of Nandamuri and Nara families gave a rousing welcome to the family members of the late N.T. Rama Rao when they reached Nimmakuru for the wedding reception of Lokesh, son of TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, and Brahmani, daughter of film actor Balakrishna, on Tuesday. There was some trouble near Gannavaram airport when the fans of Nandamuri Balakrishna and Telugu Desam activists entered into a wordy duel even before the chartered flight landed, about which bus the marriage party should travel by to the village. While Mr. Balakrishna’s fans insisted that a luxury coach hired from Kaleswari Travels be used, TDP activists wanted a coach taken from Kesineni Travels to be used. Mr. Balakrishna ended the controversy by herding all the relatives into the coach belonging to Kaleswari Travels while Mr. Naidu got into the bullet proof vehicle arranged for him by the government.

At one point of time, Mr. Balakrishna stepped into the shoes of ‘Samarasimha Reddy’, a popular character he played on silver screen, to stop his fans from entering into the convoy. Displaying his histrionics on NH-5, the actor warned his fans and TDP activists from entering into the convoy between the bus carrying the guests for the reception and his Rs. 64-lakh Audi Q7 he was riding in. “I will break your teeth and the windshields,” he thundered in a filmi style.

The scene was akin to those in his movies, the only difference being that the expensive Honda CR-Vs, Pajeros and other SUVs substituted for the Sumos often featured in films made on Rayalaseema factionism. Oblivious of this drama, Mr. Naidu arrived along with the newly married couple in Nimmakuru a full half an hour before the other guests. Even in Nimmakuru, Mr. Balakrishna had to do his own crowd management while Mr. Naidu had NSG commandos to keep the mob away. Telugu Mahila president Nannapaneni Rajakumari, however, took up the mantle of managing the guests in the queue formed to meet the bride and bridegroom by assuming for herself the role of ‘master of ceremonies’.
