KARUR: With the police suddenly turned enforcing the “compulsory helmet rule” in Karur, people made a beeline to the shops selling the headgear. Many provisional roadside shops sprouted even as traders, regular and makeshift, hiked prices to their content as the late adherents to the helmet rule rued their fate in not buying one earlier.
Wearing helmets by two-wheeler riders was made compulsory in urban areas from June 1 and in non-municipal limits from July 1. When the helmet rule was first enforced in Karur from that day, there were not many takers as the authorities had advised the police to go slow on enforcing the rule.
From then till a couple of days back, not many two-wheeler riders took the rule seriously. But the police decided to crack the whip again and many found themselves on the wrong side of the police action.
