CHENNAI: Some 80,000 colour television sets have been distributed in the city since the launch of the free CTV distribution scheme, Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan said while giving away the sets in Royapuram. Nearly 6,300 television sets were distributed in the Royapuram and Harbour assembly constituencies on Sunday.
Innovative welfare schemes in the State included free cooking gas connections for the poor, the Varummun Kappom scheme and maternity assistance for pregnant women, he said. According to a press release, he also gave away Rs. 15,000 each to 20 beneficiaries of the Moovalur Ramamirtham marriage assistance scheme at the event to distribute televisions. Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy distributed 3,152 colour television sets in Anna Nagar. The Chief Minister had taken great effort to ensure that the tenders for procurement of colour televisions were called for and awarded in a transparent manner, he said. He listed some of the development works being undertaken in Anna Nagar, including repair of roads and laying of storm water drains.
