Support from unexpected quarters

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy received support from unexpected quarters on Thursday while inaugurating the new district of Ramanagara. Congress MP Tejaswini Sriramesh made a case for the continuation of Mr. Kumaraswamy as Chief Minister.

“The tenure of Mr. Kumaraswamy was so short that we (members of Vokkaliga community) felt that his tenure was too short,” she remarked.

Ms. Tejaswini further made a veiled suggestion that the Janata Dal (S) and the Congress should join hands. “Polarisation of like-minded parties is taking place. All the secular parties in the country are coming together. In the State, we must make a responsible move keeping in mind its interests” and hastened to add that “AICC president Sonia Gandhi’s word is supreme in this regard.”

Housing Minister D.T. Jayakumar stuck to his stand that Mr. Kumaraswamy should continue as Chief Minister, but made it clear that it was his personal view.

Deputy Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa, who also attended the function, left before the above leaders made the remarks on transfer of power.

The Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister had become the centre of attraction as both of them had not even interacted for nearly 30 minutes though they were seated next to each other on the dais. However, photojournalists asked them to move close and pose for pictures.

Obliging them, both the leaders smiled and interacted with each other. The camaraderie continued even after Mr. Yediyurappa’s speech.
