Special Correspondent

Four others are also bidding for it

Project being set up with an investment of Rs. 3,590 crore

It will generate

10 lakh jobs

BANGALORE: The State Government has decided to enter the race to secure a petrochemical complex proposed by the Centre in Mangalore.

Addressing presspersons after a Cabinet meeting, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj Horatti said Karnataka, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal were bidding for the project which would be established with an investment of Rs. 3,590 crore. It would generate 10 lakh jobs.

The Government had decided to submit an application to the Union Government seeking allotment of the project to Karnataka, which was expected to be completed by 2020. The barren land in a radius of 300 km would be acquired for the project if it was allotted to the State, the Minister said.

Vidhana Soudha

A decision had been taken to set aside Rs. 230 crore for the Suvarna Karnataka Vidhana Soudha in Belgaum. A sum of Rs. 70 crore would be released in the current financial year. The foundation stone is likely to be laid on August 26.

The Cabinet cleared two names recommended by a committee headed by the Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph for appointment as members to the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal.

Those recommended were retired IAS officers P.S.S. Thomas and Rajiv Prem Kumar.

The Cabinet sanctioned 726 posts to Ramanagara district and 690 posts to Chickaballapur district. This would cost the State exchequer Rs. 46.4 crore.

The Ramanagara and Chickaballapur districts have been carved out of Bangalore Rural and Kolar districts, respectively.

The excess 283 posts in Bangalore Rural district and 310 in Kolar district would be transferred to Ramanagara and Chickaballapur districts, Mr. Horatti said.

Recruitment

The Cabinet had asked KPSC to recruit candidates for 31 posts. The Finance Department had already cleared the proposal, he said.

Mr. Horatti said it was decided to retain the Cabinet sub-committee constituted last year for recommending names for Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Sri awards. The committee is headed by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.

The Cabinet permitted Nijalingappa Medical College, Bagalkot; K.V.G. Medial College, Sullia and Vaidhehi Medical College, M.S. Ramaiah Medical College, both in Bangalore, to increase postgraduate seats from the academic year 2008-09.

To revive the Banahatti Spinning Cooperative Mill in Bagalkot district, it was decided to provide guarantee to a Rs. 21-crore loan provided by the National Cooperative Development Cooperation. Japanese technology would be used for modernisation, the Minister said.
