HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has given his nod for regularising the services of 3,786 casual employees of the AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC). Sources in the Chief Minister’s Office confirmed his approval of the proposal on Saturday, regularising the services of different categories of employees, predominantly drivers and conductors, apart from ‘shramiks’ and mechanics. The approval comes as a great relief to the casual staff, including those working since 1996. It virtually halves the number of those serving the corporation as casual workers and slightly over 3,000 people are said to be remaining. Long-standing demand
The demand for regularisation has been on the agenda of every union and they have been pressing for it for years. It is also on the list of points on the agreement reached between the Government and the unions in October 2005. The demands pending before the Government include scrapping of both the contract and outsourcing system, doing away with the practise of hiring buses and strict adherence to an eight-hour work schedule. The recognised union--National Mazdoor Union (NMU)--and the second most popular body, APSRTC Employees’ Union, hailed the Chief Minister’s decision.
