Staff Reporter
GUNTUR: The first flight will take off from the international airport being constructed at Shamshabad near Hyderabad in June 2008, Minister for Ports, Air Ports, and Basic Infrastructure Mopineni Venkata Ramana Rao has said.
The airport being constructed under the Public Private Partnership mode would have eight runways.
It was being constructed at a cost of Rs.1,200 crore meeting all the international standards, he told reporters here on Monday.
The construction, operation and maintenance of the international airport was being handled by the consortium of companies led by G.M.R Group and consisting of three other firms, he said.
Exuding confidence that the new airport would become fully operational by June 2008, the Minister said that the State Government had given the clearance for the laying of the first phase of the Outer Ring Road project connecting Gachibowli and Shamshabad airport.
ORR works
Works on ORR were likely to begin in September, he added.
Replying to a query over the feasibility of domestic flights being operated from the Begumpet airport, Mr Venkata Ramana Rao said that the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Airport Authority of India were yet to take a decision.
