Preserve hygiene

It is the duty of all to preserve hygiene in Sri Mariamman Temple Tank. The waterless tank is used as a playground by children and the sidewalk around the tank is used by people to enjoy the abundant breeze. The steps on the eastern and southern sides of the tank are used by bus passengers who get down at the Theppakulam bus stop as an open toilet. Absence of a public toilet in the area might be the reason for such a behaviour. It is high time the civic body provided the facility and saved the sanctity of the spot.

New darshan arrangement

The new darshan arrangement made at Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is good. Our long wish has been fulfilled for which we are extremely grateful to the temple chairman.

“Raise interest on deposits”

Recently, public sector banks had reduced the rate of interest on deposits. Hence, the Department of Posts has not increased interest on monthly income savings scheme. The Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, must increase the rate of interest for post office deposits so that senior citizens benefit.

Stray dog menace

On behalf of residents of G.R.Nagar, I would like to draw the Madurai Corporation’s attention to the stray dog menace in our street. Children and senior citizens are the usual targets. The continuous barking of these dogs disturbs students who are preparing for public examinations. I request the authorities to do the needful.

Impractical suggestion

PMK president S. Ramadoss’ suggestion that MBBS students can learn their subjects in Tamil is impractical. When English is emerging as the number one global language, is it wise for a student to learn one of the most complicated subjects in Tamil and find it difficult to practise outside Tamil Nadu? English language teaching has become a major industry in China who are exploiting the need of proficiency in English locally and globally. Unless we wake up to the reality and give English the importance it deserves, we are going to be left behind in medical and engineering professions.

II

English is essential for any youth to get a job at home or abroad. Realising this truth, China and Japan have started enhancing their English language skills in order to successfully meet global challenges in a competitive market. Dr.S Ramadoss has suggested an innovative idea that is not beneficial to anybody in the country. One should not fail to appreciate his creativity in spoiling the future of budding medical students. However, he and his son learnt MBBS in English. When companies have realised the need for English, it is not wise to teach medicine in Tamil. When language experts are undertaking intensive research in developing the communication skills of our students, one should not spoil the career of youths by introducing Tamil medium for medical course.
