Food production to go up this year

METTUR: State Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam on Monday said that food production this year would be more than last year’s 96 lakh tonnes.

After inspecting flood-hit areas in the district and the Stanley Reservoir, he told reporters that about 60,000 hectares was not brought under cultivation during the khariff season. But, as water from the reservoir was released in time for this irrigation season, the samba crop coverage had gone up from 14 lakh hectares to 14.60 lakh hectares in the delta region. — Special Correspondent
