This is has reference to the report ‘Bank gesture to poor students’ (The Hindu dated July 27). It is heartening to note that the Indian Bank’s Tirunelveli Circle has come to the rescue of four poor students who hav e scored high marks in the Plus Two examinations and secured seats in Government medical colleges on merit but could not join the course due to poverty. It is equally appreciable that a team of doctors from Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari has come forward to help the poor students by paying their tuition fees and have also promised them academic help and moral support. It was all made possible because The Hindu published a timely story with an apt heading ‘Poverty makes their future uncertain’ in its issue dated July 25 S. Nallasivan, Tirunelveli. II
This has reference to the news item in The Hindu dated July 25 and 27 about highlighting the plight of four Plus Two toppers from dalit community who could not continue their professional course owing to poor economic conditions of their families. The subsequent help rendered by Indian Bank and a team of Good Samaritans consisting of doctors is also worth mentioning here. This is yet another example to show the society about the power of media. I congratulate all those who are involved in this great endeavour, particularly The Hindu for this service. V. Pandy, Tuticorin. Foot overbridge needed
In Tuticorin, vehicles going towards Sterlite Industries and Tirunelveli often frequent the Palayamkottai-Tuticorin Road. Since the road is wide, vehicles pass at a rapid speed through the stretch posing threat to pedestrians. So, I request the authorities concerned to construct a foot over-bridge across the road. P. Senthil Saravana Durai, Tuticorin. Avoid night journeys
Nowadays, the rate of road accidents are on the increase. The main reason for rampant road accidents are poor maintenance of the roads and rash and negligent driving mostly under the influence of liquor. The State Government has been taking several preventive measures to bring down the accident rate. Recently the Government issued orders making it mandatory for riders and pillion riders of two-wheelers to wear helmets. Educating drivers about safe driving will be a better option than penalizing them. Most of the accidents occur during the wee hours and hence those travelling by cars or vans can avoid journeys between midnight and dawn. The crew of the long journey buses should be allowed to take adequate rest. If the road safety policy of the Government is effectively enforced and followed by the crew reduction in fatalities and injuries will be possible. Sivanthai M. Murugan, Thoothukudi. Regularise services
In Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses, several persons who have been working on daily wages as drivers and conductors on daily wages for years have not been regularised fresh conductor and drivers were recruited by the TNSTC recently, those on daily wages were not considered. As these drivers and conductors working on daily wages are experienced persons, their services should also be regularised considered and all vacancies filled up. V. Kumar, Kanyakumari.
