CHENNAI: Given the increase in passenger traffic between Chennai and the U.S., the Confederation of Indian Industry has urged Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to request the Centre to start direct flights between Chennai and the America’s west coast.

A delegation, led by Gopal Srinivasan, director of TVS Electronics Ltd, and chairman, CII, Tamil Nadu State Council, called upon the Chief Minister on Thursday.

It commended the State Government’s efforts at planning for two airports in Chennai, a release said.

At present, the monthly passenger traffic between India and the U.S. is a minimum of 7,400, including 1,800 from Chennai.

Air India was operating a direct flight to the U.S. west coast and would soon start another service from New Delhi.

The CII delegation underscored the need for a similar flight between Chennai and the west coast cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles.
