CHENNAI: One person has been arrested on charges of cheating, forgery and attempt to grab a land and a hunt is on for two others.
Police said Geetha Rani of Periyar Nagar complained that she owned land measuring 3,562 square feet valued at Rs 75 lakh near Pallavaram and had not sold it.
However, following enquiries from some land brokers, she apprehended trouble and checked with the registration authorities. The encumbrance certificate showed that the land owner had given a general power of attorney to Selvakumar who had, in turn, sold the property to Anandan through a forged sale deed.
The duo subsequently sold it to one Baranidharan of Chromepet for Rs 38 lakh and took Rs 5 lakh as advance. They again sold it to Padam Chand of Purasawalkam for Rs 17 lakh, police said. Based on the confession of Anandan (27) of Tambaram, police registered a case and produced him before a city court which remanded him to judicial custody.
His accomplices Selvakumar and Kamalakannan are yet to be arrested.
