Contempt plea filed on shifting of police station

Special Correspondent

Police yet to comply with court order, says petitioner

The police have filed a petition seeking extension of deadline

CHENNAI: A contempt of court petition, seeking to punish police officials who had failed to comply with a court order directing them to shift the Thiru.Vi.Ka. Nagar police station by May 2007 has been filed in the Madras High Court.

A Division Bench, comprising Justice S. J. Mukhopadhaya and Justice K. Suguna, before which the matter came up for hearing, has directed the authorities to submit their replies.

In his present petition, T. William Moses said though the court had passed an order dated July 31, 2006, asking the authorities to shift the K-9 police station from the hospital premises before May 31, 2007, it was still functioning from the same premises.

Between the order and the present petition, the police authorities had filed a petition seeking extension of deadline. Opposing any extension of time and assailing the “deliberate attempt” to delay the compliance with court orders, Mr. Moses said despite the court orders, the authorities had done nothing concrete to shift the police station from the Corporation Hospital campus in the locality. According to him, because of the police station the hospital could not be extended to cater for about 1 lakh residents in the region.

He said the police station also deterred patients from availing themselves of treatment.
