TNCA XI in quarterfinals

Principal Correspondent

Bangalore: The tail wagged amidst fading light and TNCA XI scripted a three-wicket victory over ONGC and entered the quarterfinals of the KSCA all-India invitation cricket tournament here on Tuesday.

In its last Group D match, TNCA XI, chasing ONGC’s 146, scored runs in short bursts that were often punctured by speedster Munaf Patel’s (three for 40) incisive bursts. TNCA XI, with an all-win record, topped Group D with four points.

The TNCA openers Einstein (19) and Anirudha Srikkanth (26) chipped in with cameos and shared a 46-run partnership in 8.3 overs that set the right platform for the chase. However a flurry of dismissals unhinged TNCA XI’s smooth progress.

Munaf trapped Anirudha with a delivery that nipped back and later cleaned up N. Einstein, who shaped to defend but failed to cover the swing and found his off-stump cartwheeling. Meanwhile, Sumit castled P. Satish for a blob and Munaf had Suresh Kumar nibbling one to the wicketkeeper.

It was time for TNCA XI skipper Vasudeva Doss to stay firm and he did that with a mix of dour defence topped with a southpaw’s elegance that often left the fielders on the arc between point and covers, short of breath. Intermittent drizzle and bad light continued to play truant and amidst intermissions, the TNCA XI chase got a second wind through its resilient lower order as K.H. Gopinath (23 n.o.), Ashwin (24) and C. Ganapathy (12) eased the pressure with a string of boundaries at the other end, while Munaf kept probing from the Pavilion End. Eventually Ganapathy guided Sehwag for a four to usher in victory.

Earlier, ONGC declared its innings at 146 for nine in 50 overs. With TNCA XI already assured of a quarterfinal berth, ONGC needed a draw or a victory to be the second team from Group D to enter the last-eight stage.

However, ONGC’s attempt to pull off an upset victory was also negated by three botched run-out attempts in critical stages on the second and final day.

The scores: ONGC 146 for nine in 50 overs (Thamizh Kumaran five for 41) lost to TNCA XI 150 for seven in 43.2 overs.

KSCA XI 277 for six in 65 overs (Bharath Chipli 81, K.B. Pawan 86) drew with Indian Oil Corporation 19 for two in 6.2 overs.

KSCA Colts 173 in 47.2 overs lost to Chemplast 174 for four in 49.5 overs (Yashpal Singh 61).

Air-India 324 for three in 59.3 overs (Prasanth Naik 100 n.o., Sushanth Marathe 84 n.o., Manish Pandey 53 n.o.) drew with Hyderabad CA 140 for nine in 72 overs (Anoop Pai 46, Moondeep Mangela four for 28, Pritham Gandhe four for 42).
