PALAKKAD: The Wildlife Protection Society of India here has urged the State Government to give wildlife sanctuary status to the recently declared buffer zone of the Silent Valley National Park as it will prevent taking up non-forestry projects like the proposed Pathrakadavu Hydroelectric Project close to the National Park. ‘Appoint adequate staff’
In a letter to the Forest Secretary to the Government of Kerala, the society’s project coordinator S. Guruvayurappan urged to appoint adequate employees to manage the buffer zone immediately. Though the buffer zone was declared some time ago staff was not appointed to protect it. The letter has also urged the Government to include Thuthampara Estate in Nelliampathy, which was recently taken over by the Government, in the proposed Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. The entire Nelliampathy forest adjacent to Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary should be made part of the proposed Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. It has also demanded the removal of electric fencing installed by the Forest Department at Thuthampara Estate as it is a threat to the lives of wild animals. It prevented the wild animals from using the water and food resources of Thuthampara forest area, the letter said.
