VISAKHAPATNAM: Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao said that August 6, 1945 would be remembered as a black day in the history of mankind. It was on that day that the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima (Japan). Word of praise
At a meeting organised by the district branch of All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation at Kancharapalem Mettu here on Monday, the Mayor underlined the importance of peace in ensuring growth and prosperity of mankind. He appreciated the role of organisations like AIPSO in promoting peace and harmony. Deputy Mayor K. Dorababu lauded the efforts of AIPSO in spreading the message of peace among school children. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor released doves to signify peace on the occasion. AIPSO district branch president Devarakonda Markandeyulu presided. Its secretary S.V. Prasad Rao and representatives J.V. Prabhakar, A.J. Stalin, Sukumaran, Vimala Kumari, Mahesh and Mahesh were among those who attended. Students and staff of Government ITI and children of various schools participated in the programme. As part of a weeklong programme for peace and harmony to observe Hiroshima and Nagasaki Day, an exhibition of photo posters and a meeting was held at St. Joseph’s College for Women on Monday. Dr. P. Sarada, chemistry department head inaugurated. Later, the audience observed two-minute silence to pay homage to those killed in the disaster on August 6, 1945. Chairman of BV Foundation for Peace and Harmony Narava Prakasa Rao, Sister N.D. Veronica, principal, P. Madhubala, Sundari, T.V. Lakshmi, V. Ramalakshmi and Krishna Kumari and other heads of departments spoke.
