Chennai: C.J. Arvind of Birlasoft, Chennai trapped the queen of two-time winner and International Master R. Balasubramaniun of ICF to win the 7th Adyar Times FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament that concluded here on Sunday. Arvind, who lives within walking distance from the playing hall, is a former student of Manuel Aaron and is making a comeback to chess. The 1981-born player had previously played for University of Madras team which won the World Inter-University at Singapore in 1999. Arvind became the sixth player to win this competition. He received Rs.20,000 as cash prize and also the winner trophy. “Winning the only tournament I get to play in a calendar year makes me feel good,” said Arvind who is pursuing a full-time career with Birlasoft. In the dramatic final round, overnight leader IM R.R. Laxman was defeated by young P. Karthikeyan in 34 moves with a spectacular queen sacrifice. Laxman’s draw offer came too late and he lost five moves later to finish second. Mumbai’s 13-year old Prasanna Rao, sponsored by ING Mutual Fund excelled defeating IM Shyam Sundar in an ending to tie for the second place and finish sixth. In the closing function, Lion Ashok Seth, Chairman, Lions Club of South Madras Trust distributed the cash prizes. Standings: 1 C.J. Arvind 8.5/10, 2-6 R.R. Laxman, C. Praveen Kumar, P.
