KOLKATA: India’s Dola Banerjee won the second international gold medal of her career when she bagged the individual recurve title of the fourth leg of the Meteksan World Cup archery at Dover (England) on Sunday.

Second-seeded Dola defeated top-seeded Chinese Juan Juan Zhang 111-110 points in the summit clash. Dola’s first international gold medal came in 2005 at the Golden Arrow meet at Antalya (Turkey).

Jayanta Talukdar too won a gold medal in the men’s section in 2006 at Porec (Croatia) and in the same year he qualified for the final at Merida (Mexico) where he finished fourth in a field of four. Dola’s latest success also enabled her to figure in this year’s final at Dubai where the best four women compete for the honours on November 24.

En route to the gold medal, Dola eliminated 10th seed Elena Tonetta of Italy. Dola scored 109 (10,9) as against Elena’s 109 (10,6). She beat Meliorate Cwienczek of Poland in the semifinals 108-101 before defeating Juan Juan in the final.

The other Indian, 13th-seeded Chekrovolu Swuro lost to fifth-seeded Justyna Mospinek of Poland 108-105 in the quarterfinals. On Saturday, the Indian women’s team took the bronze medal beating Poland 208-198 after losing to Italy in the semifinals 210-216.

Poor show

The Indian men’s team, failing to book the Olympic quota places at the Leipzig world championship, did badly in this tournament. The team, comprising Rahul Banerjee, Somai Murmu and Tarundeep Rai, ranked 10th, managed to beat Ukraine 214-209 in the pre-quarterfinals but bowed to Great Britain in the quarterfinals at 219-220. Rai lost in the first round to Goktug Ergin of Turkey 100-107.

Murmu lost in the second round to the ultimate winner Baljinima Tsyrempilov of Russia 108-113.

He beat Matej Zupanc of Slovania 104-101 in the first round. Banerjee defeated Dmytri Hrachov of Ukraine in the second round 108-102 before losing to third seed Simon Terry of Great Britain 108-107.
