TIRUNELVELI: Farmers of the district, who are running from pillar to post to identify a good number of experienced workforce for transplanting paddy saplings from the nursery, can now rely upon an imported equipment that can transplant seedlings on one acre land within 150 minutes, consuming just one litre diesel.

The only condition for using this machine is that the farmer should be prepared to follow the ‘system of rice intensification’ method, which assures high yield than the paddy being cultivated in conventional methods.

Demonstration of this user-friendly equipment was conducted in a field of Manonmani, a progressive farmer from Thenpaththu near Tirunelveli on Thursday in the presence of the Collector, G. Prakash.

Since the district has a target of achieving 21,800 hectares under paddy cultivation during the present ‘kar’ season, the demand for agricultural labourers is on the rise. Hence it is felt that mechanisation alone will be the appropriate solution to this perennial problem.

Mr. Prakash was impressed by the performance of the equipment.

The Assistant Director - Research (Agriculture), M. Thanikodi, said the SRI technique had ensured 20 to 30 increase in the yield, thanks to the mat nursery method, drying and wetting, weeding and incorporation of weed foliage with cono-weeder for adding more organic matter to the soil, judicious use of organic manure and need-based top-dressing of urea by using leaf colour chart.

The Assistant Executive Engineer, Department of Agricultural Engineering, Mohamed Ali, the Deputy Director of Agriculture (Agronomy), S. Veluchami, the Agricultural Officer (Information and Training), D. Nagarajan and others participated.
