Welfare programmes for tribals
Special Correspondent
KOLLI HILLS: The Madras Aluminium Company Limited (MALCO) has been organising many welfare programmes for a sustainable development of the tribals at Kolli Hills in Namakkal district.
Education, health and livelihood are being given priority.
The firm has now taken the initiative of spreading awareness on HIV with focus on prevention and control. MALCO has drawn many programmes for providing care and support to the HIV infected people.
Counselling
It recently organised a free counselling and testing programme for all drivers and helpers at Kolli Hills.
In it more than 200 drivers and cleaners voluntarily attended testing and received counselling.
Many of the participants shared their views and expressed willingness to know their HIV status.
Lack of time and the nature of their work had made it impossible for them to know their status till recently.
They felt the programme was an opportunity to know HIV. At the end of it all the participants were given motivational gifts and awareness materials.
Small beginning
By concluding this program Mr. Kannan, MALCO Mines Manager said that it was a small beginning and MALCO would work hard to make the tribals at Kolli Hills free from HIV/AIDS scourge.
