Rainwater harvesting will reduce flooding response

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: In response to the Public Eye feature on the preparedness of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to tackle heavy rain, S. Kavitha of Nagarabhavi, says: The use non-biodegradable material and absence of facilities to harvest excess rain are to blame for the rain havoc.

People should be encouraged to go back to grandma’s cotton bags for purchase of fruits. And, flower vendors should switch back to using leaves for packing flowers, she says

Adoption of rainwater harvesting technology will reduce flooding of roads, traffic jams during rain and ensure free movement of pedestrians even in low-lying areas.

Besides, the real estate growth has produced huge amounts of waste. People should be discouraged from owning multiple sites and houses, she says.

It is time citizens and the Government took action to avert future catastrophes.
