Gang held for fake notes circulation

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Seven members of a gang, including two former policemen, who allegedly indulged in doubling and circulation of fake currency notes, fake gold coins and waylaying, were arrested on Friday.

Speaking to reporters, Commissioner of Police Letika Saran said that a special team was formed to check the menace.

Following a tip-off, the police monitored the movements of some persons suspected to be involved in the racket. “We had information that the gang was circulating fake currencies and gold coins in neighbouring States too.”

Additional Commissioner S. R. Jangid said that when M. Mahavir of Kosapet was assaulted by a gang near the B & C Mills complex on Thursday, the police chased and secured one of the accused Babu. Investigations revealed that the gang committed crime in the city, but functioned clandestinely from a place in Vellore district.

Based on a confession, the team led by Assistant Commissioner (Central Crime Branch) Jayakumar rushed to the spot.

During a raid conducted on a house, they seized 50 fake gold coins, hundreds of fake currency notes, a machine used to cut the papers, a few mobile phones, and one car allegedly used to transport the materials.

Apart from Babu, the other arrested persons were Kothandaram Rao (66), Asgar Ali (45), K Shanmugam (39), Paramasivam (47) and two ex-policemen Santhosh Raj (48) and Suresh (52).

Joint Commissioner (North) M.Ravi said that apart from circulating fake currency notes, the gang also ‘exchanged’ gold coins which too were duplicate pieces.

He said a few of the accused were wanted in criminal cases in Vellore and Chennai.
