Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and Alchem International Limited, Harayana, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding here on Friday.

According to a university release, the MoU was to undertake a collaborative project on “Participatory Programme for Training and Demonstration for Yield Stabilisation in Gloriosa superba”. ‘Gloriosa superba’ was one of the most important medicinal crops cultivated in the country. The MoU was signed by P. Santhana Krishnan, Registrar of TNAU, and J.S. Grewal, Senior Vice-President, Purchase, of Alchem.

Alchem International was one of India’s largest manufacturers of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), from plant sources. It was also engaged in the sourcing of Glory lily seeds from Tamil Nadu.

The State was responsible for cultivating Glory lily in more than 3,000 acres. Poor yield and disease infestation were the major problems faced by the farmers.

The MoU would entail the university to offer expertise to impart training to the Field Officers of Alchem, on improved management practices for obtaining stable yield. The university would also conduct demonstrations on improved technologies. The project would be for two years. K. Rajamani, Professor and Head, Department of Spices and plantation Crops, of the university, would be the Principal Investigator.
