CHENNAI: The State Government will absorb all the 285 PG diploma students in government medical colleges, Health Secretary V.K. Subburaj said here on Sunday. A government order has been issued and counselling will be held on Wednesday. The aim is to implement the three-year bond, executed by the students agreeing to work in the Government sector, he said, inaugurating the day-long workshop organised by Madras Medical College Anaesthesia Continuing Medical Education (MACME). The Government’s request to add over 300 seats in PG classes had also been sanctioned, he said. In response to appeals by anaesthetists, Mr. Subburaj said that of the 5,000 people to be trained as technicians in various specialities this year, 500 would be trained as anaesthesia technicians. With an objective of imparting various skills, the first batch of doctors from rural areas was trained for six months in performing surgeries too. The batch would have to undergo a theory and practical test before returning to their jobs. MMC dean T.P. Kalaniti urged the Government to increase faculty in proportion with the increased work at the hospital. He called for such workshops in other medical colleges also. MACME founder R. Chandrasekaran said the seventh edition of the workshop included six lectures, workshop and quiz for practitioners and PG students. Head of the department S. Gayathri called for a training centre for the students. Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority vice-chairman R. Santhanam felicitated the Anaesthesiology Department of MMC and the sponsors of MACME, the Anaesthesia CME Society.
