Madurai
Gauge conversion It is highly laudable that the Indian Railways had mobilised modern machinery and technology to expedite gauge conversion of Villupuram-Mayiladuturai section. It is also encouraging to note that a feasibility study will be made to lay tracks between Puducherry and Cuddalore. An express train from Puducherry to Salem via Villupuram, Cuddalore, Neyveli, Vriddachchalam could be run once the work is completed. Political pressure is needed to complete the Salem-Karur project, which is long overdue. S. Gopalan, Maraimalai Nagar Alumni meet The Directorate of Distance Education of Madurai Kamaraj University is blazing a trail in the move to start alumni associations at different places to bring its old students together ( The Hindu , May 30). Distance education mode has proved a boon to those who were not fortunate enough to pursue higher studies when they were young, for a variety of reasons. Therefore, after its advent, a large number of people, after joining service, have been acquiring not only their first degrees but also postgraduate degrees for career advancement and knowledge enrichment. Besides, many an official after his retirement, has also obtained higher degrees in discipline(s) of his choice to quench his desire for self-fulfilment. Under the circumstances, when all these persons gather together in an alumini association, the scope for the university to tap their varied experience and expertise will be immense. One would expect other universities in Tamil Nadu, which have distance education centres, to follow in Madurai Kamaraj University's footsteps before long. V. Krishnamoorthy, Madurai Damaged roads Even while one is glad to learn that most of the damaged roads in the city are being re-laid in phases, it is also sad to see that the renovated roads are uneven and paved in a haphazard manner and completed in a hasty way. It shows negligence on the part of officials. Motorists can `feel' the road surface while driving on many stretches, mostly on Alagarkoil Road from Goripalayam to Outpost, North Veli Street and Sellur Road. Patch works could be seen on most of the roads. It is quite obvious that these roads will not last for long. No doubt to say that the Government money has been wasted. I appeal to the officials concerned to adopt scientific methods in road laying so that they will withstand the wear and tear of continuous vehicle traffic for years. R.G. Rethinam, Madurai Vehicle-check Police personnel have to discharge their duty promptly; there is no doubt about it. But it is the place where they stand to check and charge the people who do not have driving licence, which matters. Exactly where one gets down from the NMR Subburaman Bridge near Jeyavilas, the police catch hold of motorcyclists to check their licence and all. The police constables act in a very brash manner, as if they are going to catch thieves. On seeing the police, the riders suddenly apply the brakes, following which those who trail behind them tend to crash on them leading to accidents. The traffic police should frame some rules and regulations on appropriate places to check the records. C. Balasubramanian, Madurai
