CUDDALORE: The youth wing of the Pattali Makkal Katchi on Monday organised a white-uniform rally here and a conference to focus attention on streamlining youth power for the betterment of society.

The conference exhorted the youth to eschew vices such as addiction to liquor, drug abuse, dowry harassment and obsession with raffles and movies.

It appealed to them to strive for creating a society free from violence and terrorism as dreamt of by party founder S. Ramadoss.

Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss administered 10 oaths to the youth who had gathered in large numbers.

Bane of liquor

Dr. Ramadoss said the youth could make his dream a reality and, therefore, the PMK was imparting training to them.

Four decades ago only five per cent of the population consumed liquor, but now a whole generation had become addicted to liquor. He deemed it as another freedom struggle to bail the youth out of addiction. It was a matter of concern that Cuddalore and Villupuram districts, which fared poorly in Plus Two examinations, topped in liquor consumption.

He called upon the youth to take up traditional sports such as `chadugudu' and `silambam' and converse in chaste Tamil. Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss called upon the youth to spread awareness among rural people about HIV/AIDS. He urged them to donate blood and eyes and plant two lakh saplings on July 25, the Pasumai Thayagam Day. G.K. Mani, party president, said the conference was held not with elections in mind but for the well being of the youth. Union Minister of State for Railways Velu was among those who participated.
