IN POLICE NET: Neeraj Vaidya was arrested by Mysore police following a complaint lodged by a woman.

MYSORE: A man from Hyderabad who was allegedly blackmailing women from Mysore after getting their personal details through online chats, has been arrested by the city police.

The police said that the modus operandi of the accused Neeraj Vaidya, an employee of a software firm in Hyderabad, was to befriend women through online chats and extract personal information from them. Subsequently, he used to call them from his mobile and blackmail them.

The accused, who is around 30, had allegedly extorted huge sums of money from the unsuspecting women.

After receiving a complaint from a woman in Mysore, whose identity the police refused to reveal, a team of policemen from the city managed to track down the mobile number of the accused to Hyderabad.

"He was blackmailing her from a mobile phone, which was traced to Hyderabad", Mysore City Police Commissioner Pravin Sood told The Hindu.

A police team from Mysore was despatched to Hyderabad and the accused was caught. Neeraj was brought to Mysore and produced before the court.

"He will be booked for extortion," Mr. Sood said.

The police recovered from him Rs. 1,65,000, a computer, a laptop, and mobile phone sets. "The victims sometimes despatch even their photographs unwittingly", a police officer said.

Soon after getting hold of the information, the accused used to call his victims and blackmail them. "He would threaten to inform their relatives if they did not pay up," he said.

Mr. Sood said the accused used to direct his victims to deposit the money in a bank account.
