CPI(M-L) flays Puducherry councillors, chairperson

Special Correspondent

"They have brought disrepute to council"

  • "Chairperson neglecting councillors at meetings"
  • Law to recall councillors, Chairperson sought

Puducherry: Secretary of the Puducherry State unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist Leninist) S. Balasubramanian expressed concern over the `disrepute' brought by members of Puducherry Municipality to the idea of municipal administration at the council meeting on Monday by hurling chairs and using abusive language against the chairperson B. Sridevi.

    `Incident not an exception'

These incidents were not an exception as all the meetings held so far since formation of the council after the June 2006 polls had been marked by `violence and riotous conduct' on the part of the councillors, Mr. Balasubramanian said in a release here on Wednesday.

He also alleged that the chairperson had been ignoring the elected councillors at crucial meetings convened to decide the tenders for development of amenities and provision of infrastructure in the wards.

This `neglect' by the head of the council was the immediate cause of bedlam in the council meeting on Monday.

He said there should be an amendment to the municipal legislations to pave the way for recall of the councillors and chairpersons whenever they transgressed their limits.

    Jobless teachers' plight

Mr. Balasubramanian said it was heart rending to see that trained teachers were languishing without jobs.

He said the Government government should heed their plea of providing jobs in the government schools on the basis of seniority in the registration in Employment Exchange.
