NCP seeks investigation into encroachments

Staff Reporter

`Vast tracts in northern districts trespassed'

KOZHIKODE: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan ought to order an inquiry into the alleged illegal occupancy of vast extent of land in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts and Parambikulam in Palakkad district, M.P. Gangadharan, national executive committee member of the Nationalist Congress Party, has said.

Addressing media persons here on Wednesday, Mr. Gangadharan wanted the Chief Minister to make a first hand assessment of the encroachments in the northern districts by monopolists just as he had done in the case of Idukki and Kottayam districts.

"Encroachments by monopolists have been going on for the last more than five years and it was up to the State Government to arrest the trend. Though the initiative taken by the Chief Minister is laudable to what extent the trend can be stopped is yet to be seen," he said.

Smart City hailed

The NCP leader commended the stipulations with regard to the implementation of the Smart City Project published by the State Government so far.

Mr. Gangadharan opined that the judiciary was not the same as it was ten years after the country attained Independence.

He alleged that the international trade agreements entered into by the Centre was crippling the agriculture sector and Kerala in particular.

The GDP index registered a downward trend and poverty among the people was increasing.

Referring to the elections in Uttar Pradesh, he opined that change in the polity at the Centre was inevitable. A secular third front comprising Left parties and regional parties with national perspective was likely to emerge, he added.
