Nethaji downs National

Karaikudi: Nethaji Football Club, Thanjavur posted an emphatic 4-0 victory over National Football Club, Salem in the inaugural match of the 24th annual Universal Trophy champion Club football tournament at the Krishna Stadium, Velangudi near here on Thursday.

Suresh headed in the first goal in the 10th minute off a centre from Chelladurai. Mani scored the second off a Suresh pass in the 30th minute. Vinoth scored the third in the 55th minute. In the 69th minute, Mani took a powerful shot from near the top of the box but the ball struck the cross piece and rebounded. Suresh volleyed home the rebound to complete the tally.

Two share lead

S. Kaushik of TCA and Vasantha Ruba Varman of Chennai shared the lead in the boys section, while P.V. Nandhitha of Namakkal and U. Ashwini of Chennai shared the lead in the girls section, with 4 points each, at the end of the fourth round in the Tamil Nadu State under-11 chess championship for Dolphin Trophy, organised by the Madurai District Chess Association at Madurai on Thursday.

Easy for Tuticorin

Host Tuticorin beat Visakhapatnam 49-27 for its second win in the three-team `B' pool league and entered the semifinals of the 27th All India Major Ports Kabaddi tournament at the Port Sports Council ground, Tuticorin on Thursday.

The results: Pool A: Mumbai bt Paradip 30-10; Chennai bt Mormu Goa 25-6; Mumbai bt Mormu Goa 27-12; Chennai bt Paradip 25-3.

Pool B: Tuticorin bt Visakhapatnam 49-27; Tuticorin bt Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Mumbai, 35-12.

Basketball tournament

B.S.N.L, Southern Railway, Chennai, Port Truest, Tuticorin, SAI Salam, and Armed Police, Madurai are among the 29 teams that will be participating in the 15th annual Cauvery Ammal memorial Trophy State-level basketball tournament, which will get under way at Vadamadurai near Dindigul on Friday.
