Indian Liberal Group's plea

GUNTUR: The Indian Liberal Group had brought to the notice of State Government over the deteriorating quality of teaching at Guntur Medical College, which was the best in the country till a decade ago, but lack of proper initiative there was threat of total de-recognition of the college.

The Indian Liberal Group leader Y. Shivaji told The Hindu here on Saturday that it was not the reduction of 25 seats only, but what they were worried over was the rider by the Medical Council of India in the remarks column that it had recommended for de-recognition and stopping of admission.

Salary of the teaching faculty must be enhanced substantially to dissuade them from taking up private practice by providing non-practicing allowance and increasing the salary so that faculty members do not go to private colleges for higher pay packet. Private practice being virtually tax-free it was proving lucrative of the faculty to focus on it. "At a seminar in Hyderabad recently Health Minister Konijeti Rosaiah was told about all these problems and he understands everything, but lack of initiative looks like a purposeful deed to dilute the quality of education here," said Dr. Shivaji.
