They want vacant government posts filled

AGAINST UNEMPLOYMENT: Activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India staging a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Hassan on Wednesday.

HASSAN: Hassan district unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Wednesday protesting against unemployment and abolishing of certain posts.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner, president of the unit B.G. Girish and secretary Shavel Hameed stated that there were more than 12.50 crore unemployed youth in the country. Nearly 12.5 lakh youth had registered themselves with employment exchanges in the State. Frustration among youth forced them to commit suicide. The 40 lakh posts in both State and Central Government had not been filled up for many years, they said.

Although the Karnataka Government announced that it would fill up all 80,000 vacant posts as mentioned in the common minimum programme of the coalition Government, it had not been implemented. The Finance Department had sent a proposal to the Government to abolish 7,000 posts. In addition to unemployed youth, there were thousands of people working on contract basis, part time lecturers, temporary drivers and conductors. All these people would be affected by such policies. Hence the federation launched an agitation.

Filling up of all vacant posts, stopping abolition of posts, filling up vacant posts of teachers and lecturers, regularising contract workers, giving unemployment allowance, filling up backlog posts, implementing projects in the districts, waiving application fees, postal orders, police verification and appointing teachers before they cross their age limit were among some of their demands.
